The WIMS SLC is part service organization, part
social club, and part government that represents students involved in
our Engineering Research Center (ERC). Involvement in the SLC is fun,
useful, and a great way to become more active in the day-to-day workings
of the ERC. The SLC provides students with a unique opportunity to develop
leadership and management skills that may not be part of their curriculum.
The SLC has graduate and undergraduate student members at each of the
participating institutions. It is organized with its primary leadership
at UM and vice-chairpersons at MSU and MTU to ensure center-wide participation.
The organization is split into four standing committees: education,
industrial, activities, and social. Each committee has a chairperson
that is elected to a one year term by WIMS students at the end of each
calendar year. Overall, the SLC provides a well-rounded experience for
students through seminars/workshops, community outreach, social functions,
and industrial interaction.

The educational committee is a formal mechanism
for students to contribute to the center above and beyond their research
by participating in education and outreach events. The chairperson works
closely with center leadership to plan various activities, such as educational
projects to excite K-12 students about engineering, undergraduate recruitment
events, and graduate programs. In addition to traditional educational
events, the committee also works to raise the general public's awareness
about science and WIMS.

On the social front, the SLC facilitates engineering
education beyond traditional methods, providing a social setting in
which students from different disciplines and backgrounds within the
center can network, collaborate, and build friendships with people outside
individual labs. Students at NSF-sponsored centers should benefit from
a broader range of experiences than typical university research assistants,
including multidisciplinary interactions and opportunities to network
with a wide variety of science and engineering professionals. The WIMS
social committee fosters interaction amongst all members of the WIMS
Center to promote a productive and enjoyable education and work environment.

The industrial committee of the SLC works to provide
a close relationship between students and industrial companies, giving
WIMS students an additional advantage over traditional graduate students.
The Committee Chair works with the Industrial Liaison to put together
a resume booklet, keep students up to date with job postings, and foster
relationships between member companies and the students.

The activities chair serves as a liaison between
the center and the University as a whole. The committee organizes WIMS
participation in University sponsored events, such as Welcome Day, Tech
Day, student seminars, and volunteer efforts. These events are a good
way for the center to get involved with various University wide events
and increase the community visibility of the WIMS center.

The public relations chair works to promote awareness
of WIMS research activities to the media and the student body at large.
This is done through the coordination and distribution of press releases
to various media outlets along with the College of Engineering science
reporter.
