| WIMS ERC SEMINAR SERIES ANNOUNCEMENT DATE: December 3, 2009 TIME: 3:30pm - 4:30pm PLACE: 1200 EECS SPEAKER: Yongmin Kim, Ph.D., Professor of Bioengineering, Professor of Electrical Engineering, University of Washington, Seattle, WA. TITLE: ENGINEERING THE 21st CENTURY HEALTHCARE ABSTRACT: The goal of Distributed Diagnosis and Home Healthcare (D2H2) is to improve quality of care and patient wellness and outcomes by transforming the delivery of healthcare from a central, hospital-based system to one that is more distributed, patient-centered and home-based. D2H2 will benefit patients by improving the quality and convenience of care, controlling healthcare cost, and preventing medical errors, thus leading to increased access to affordable and effective healthcare. Technology will be the pulling force into this new era of healthcare and its delivery. Also, how to address key non-technical challenges in D2H2 (e.g., stakeholder’s resistance and business model) and manage the process of unleashing technological advances will be critical to the success of this new healthcare paradigm. Moreover, the success is dependent on bridging the ‘valley of death’ in technologies for D2H2 and creating a dynamic and entrepreneurial environment and support system for translational research and closer ties and collaboration between researchers, engineers, industry, clinicians and healthcare organizations. We believe that the D2H2 paradigm, with many of the stakeholders working together toward the common and societal good, will aid in developing a sustainable 21st-century healthcare system with the potential to improve accessibility to healthcare, increase care quality, and control healthcare costs, not only in the developed countries but also in the developing countries. | |
